As a magneto-optical recording medium used for the above-mentioned apparatus, there are known a system in which a magnetic film layer is provided on a glass substrate and a readout light is applied directly to the magnetic film layer, a system in which the magnetic film layer is provided on a light transmission substrate and a readout light is applied through a polarizing beam splitter, and a system in which the magnetic film layer is provided on a magnetic substrate and a readout light is applied through a polarizing beam splitter.
Recently, the above-mentioned apparatus of the holography type has been attracting attention as an information recording/reproducing apparatus for a high density recording of the order of Giga bits per square inch on a magneto-optical recording medium. This is because a large quantity of information can be recorded with a small amount of light and the apparatus is inexpensive.
